New and Upcoming Projects Breaking Ground in Austin

As more companies move to Austin and the market bounces back to pre-pandemic levels, the number of businesses, projects, and development communities breaking ground continue to grow. We’ve rounded up some of the most interesting recent and upcoming ones:

NEW AND UPCOMING PROJECTS BREAKING GROUND IN AUSTIN

TESLA GIGAFACTORY

Texas has been buzzing with news of Elon Musk’s relocation to Austin and the decision to headquarter Tesla in town. Since the Gigafactory broke ground in 2021, people have been wondering when they’ll officially open. There’s good news for curious minds and barbecue lovers, because Tesla plans to throw what could be the largest barbecue event in Texas history at its opening on April 7, 2022 at the Tesla Austin factory. 

SAMSUNG AUSTIN

Samsung is investing $17 billion in a facility in Taylor that will manufacture semiconductor solutions that power next-generation innovations and technologies like cell phone components and AI technology. Groundbreaking is set to start this year, and the facility should be operational in 2024.

If you’ve seen the sailboat-shaped 590-foot-tall downtown building that broke ground in 2021, you might be wondering what’s going to happen with it. Construction is expected to finish in May, and Google will be moving into the tower soon after. Additionally, Uchi’s expansion of a new location named Uchibā will go in the building.

According to Austonia, a building set to be the tallest in Texas is planned for Downtown Austin. The Austin Towers anticipates the project will take 64 months to complete, but at a reported 1,034 feet, it makes sense that it would take awhile. 

GOOGLE EXPANSION

Google is making moves in the city as part of its promise to invest $50 million to expand in Austin and across Texas. Some recent exciting developments include their new Google Fiber location on South Lamar 701 S. Lamar Blvd. They also announced their tenth Gigabit Community in Austin at Chalmers Courts which will give nearly 110 residents free internet.

According to KXAN, SpaceX plans to break ground on a new Starlink equipment factory in Austin. They’ve posted job opportunities on their website, too. Details about the dates and location have yet to be determined. 

3D PRINTED HOME COMMUNITY

According to one of the largest 3D home developers, ICON,, 3D homes have the potential to help with affordable housing. They plan to create the world’s largest 3D printed community and break ground later this year. According to The Austin American-Statesman, the company debuted a 3D printed house during South By Southwest. 

MANOR EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL

KLBJ radio reported that the Manor Independent School District broke ground on what will be an 85,000-square-foot collegiate space that will accommodate more than 800 students. The plan is to welcome students in the fall of 2023. 

PERENNIAL

Cielo Property Group purchased the space where the Brazos Hall event venue was previously located in 2021, and they plan to break ground on a glass fortress of a building named Perennial later this summer. The 46-story office building will follow the trend of towering glass buildings in Downtown Austin. According to the Austin Business Journal, the ground floor will be open to the public and will have a 28-foot waterfall, retail stores, and restaurants. The building is set to be finished in 2025.

LENOX GRAND

According to Community Impact, development company OHT Partners broke ground on a 315-unit multifamily development called Lenox Grand in January. OHT Vice President of Development Ben Browder pointed out that with the increasing number of high paying jobs in Austin, the need for more housing near the Domain is the reason for Lenox Grand. People working nearby at Facebook, Apple, and more will be able to live closer to their offices. The project is set to be completed in 2023. 

UPTOWN ATX

The area known as “The IBM Campus” is poised to attempt to transform into the “second downtown” after a project known as Uptown ATX broke ground in 2021. Uptown ATX will be a mixed-use community with a heavy focus on transit, and it will have its own MetroRail stop. They plan to have seven parks and 23 miles of hike and bike trails. When completed, there will be 3.2 million square feet of workspaces, residences, and retail.  

APPLE

According to KXAN, the new $1 billion Austin Apple campus that’s been talked about for years has finally completed the first phase of construction. This north office construction is planned in five phases, but it was initially set to finish in 2022 but was stalled from construction and material delays. They are going to complete the campus even though the company will likely allow many employees to continue to work from home through a hybrid model, according to CNBC.

PEARSON RANCH

The 156-acre mixed-use project will feature office space, retail, hotels, housing, and parks. They intend to build thousands of multifamily housing units, and the area is surrounded by natural beauty and ready for parks and trails. According to Community Impact, Pearson Ranch will be just 2 miles from Apple’s new campus. In terms of transit, Pearson Ranch is located east of Capital Metro’s Lakeline Station and visitors can access buses and the MetroRail.

LEANDER SPRINGS

Leander Springs is a 78-acre, mixed-use project with retail, restaurant, entertainment, hospitality, office, and residential elements. The project is estimated to cost $1 billion, and the city of Leander recently approved the 4-acre Leander Springs lagoon feature. There will also be 21 acres of parks. The development will be just minutes from Downtown Austin via the Leander MetroRail. 

MOODY CENTER

Though it may be confusing to differentiate another facility with Moody in the name, this is different from the Moody Theater. This world-class concert venue is set to open in the spring of 2022, and it will be the new home of The University of Texas women’s and men’s basketball teams. The venue will seat more than 15,000 people.
