Austin is well-known for its movie theaters — Alamo Drafthouse started here after all! There are movie theaters that show the weirdest indie movies, different themed Drafthouse locations, places with plenty of popcorn, and showings where you can order dinner and drinks.
Check out these great movie theaters in Austin the next time you’re wanting to catch a flick:
Violet Crown Cinema in downtown Austin is a locally owned indie film house that features independent films, documentaries, and foreign films. If you’re a film buff and love to see a good unique film, check out their box office! With two cozy and comfortable theaters, they have showings every night of the week.
Alamo Drafthouse put the “dinner and movie” experience in one. Originally from Austin, Alamo is now a loved theatre throughout the nation! They’ve got great food, good drinks, and are known for their unique offers here like Master Pancake and Sing-A-Longs as well.
Moviehouse & Eatery by Cinépolis
Moviehouse and Eatery is yet another theatre that offers dinner and a movie in one! Recently merged with Cinépolis, this theatre in Southwest Austin is perfect for a romantic date night with your special someone. Their showings are often a mix between blockbuster hits and indie films.
This historic theatre on Congress Avenue has seen a lot of great people. From Harry Houdini to Johnny Cash, the theatre has a rich history that’s felt as soon as you walk in the door. They often show cult classics and other oldies on their big screen. Membership with them gives guests access to their film series, which is a perfect place for any film buff.
If you want to get the 3D experience of the latest hits, the IMAX theater at the Bullock Museum on the UT campus is the place to be. The theatre offers comfortable seating, high-quality (and sanitized) 3D glasses, and is a perfect place to bring the family and those who love to be blown away by special effects.
The Austin Film Society’s 2-room theatre is a top spot for indie and foreign films. They often have community events as well. It’s a rare nonprofit art house theatre in North Central Austin and is a go-to spot if you’re looking for a unique film experience. Oh, did we mention they also have a full bar?
