As the name implies, Westlake is west of Lake Austin. It covers approximately 31 square miles and is a blend of urban community and natural beauty with winding roads through the hills revealing some of the best views in the area, yet it's only 10 minutes from downtown. Typically when someone says they live in Westlake, they're referring to the area geographically covered by the Eanes Independent School District.

Some of the homes in Westlake are 25 to 30 years old, and many of them have been renovated and expanded to meet the needs of today's buyers. There is also new construction available, and every type of architecture is represented: traditional homes, contemporary homes, Tuscan style, and everything in between. Prices range from $300,000.00 to the multimillions, with a few pockets of lower-priced homes and condominiums. There are properties secluded on hilltop acreage, and there are waterfront properties located on Lake Austin.

Contrary to popular myth, the Eanes School District has the lowest tax rate of any of the districts in the area. The Eanes District is rated exemplary by the Texas Board of Education, as are eight of the nine schools. Westlake High School is rated in the top 100 nationally by both Newsweek and US News and World Report magazines. For those desiring a private school education, there are many options in Westlake or within easy commuting distance.

Austin has two major shopping malls, and one of them, Barton Creek, is located in Westlake. The only Nordstrom's department store in Austin is located at this mall. The Village at Westlake shopping center is located at the intersection of Bee Caves Road and Capital of Texas Highway, and is home to small boutiques, restaurants, and what many people say is the best HEB grocery store in the state. All along Bee Caves road, residents will find restaurants, specialty shops, medical facilities, and other necessary services. Las Palomas serves interior Mexican food. For great Tex-Mex, head to Maudie's. Another local favorite is Texas Honey Ham, The Grove, and the iconic food trailers across the street are also favorite neighborhood spots. The Barton Creek Greenbelt is an urban oasis with many access points in Westlake. Westlake Beach is a favorite spot for school field trips and corporate events. Austin Country Club, which was founded in the 19th Century, is located here, as is Lost Creek Country Club. Barton Creek Country Club is nearby. All three provide golfing, tennis, dining, and social activities.
