Tanglewood is about 25 minutes south from Downtown Austin and is conveniently located along Slaughter Lane, between both highways MoPac and I 35. This gives multiple options for commuting. There is also the direct downtown bus line starting at Westgate and Slaughter Lane and ending at the State Capital Building. Tanglewood consists of multiple sections with the main area north of Slaughter and bordering Manchaca, and a smaller community on the south side of Slaughter. The local schools are Kocurek and Cowan elementary, Bailey Middle School and Akins High School.

Home construction was started in 1982 and the majority of homes were completed by 1996, although there were homes being built as early as 2003. Home styles range from an economical 1,000 square foot single story ranch up to over 3,000 square foot estate-style properties. What makes Tanglewood unique is the bring-your-builder type of development, which gives each home a distinct feeling.

Along the streets lines by old trees and lot sizes that average just around a fifth of an acre, the neighborhood has a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. Also, next door is Native South Food Park with multiple food trucks and food stands. For shopping, there are three immediate commercial centers, which feature a large HEB, local restaurants, such as Maudie's, Thunder Cloud Subs, Galaxy Buffet and Planet Fitness.
