Part of Austin's 78702 zip code, Swede Hill is on the National Registry of Historic Places. Founded by Swedish immigrants in the 1870s, original homes went up between 1880 and 1930. The University of Texas at Austin and Interstate 35 claimed part of the community, and what remains today lies just east of Interstate 35 between East 12th Street and East Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Depending on the address, students attend either Blackshear Elementary (PK-5), Kealing Middle (6-8), and Eastside Memorial High (9-12) or Campbell Elementary (PK-5), Kealing Middle (6-8), and McCallum High School (9-12). The downtown area provides daycare and private school options, such as Stepping Stone School (6 weeks – 5 years), The Khabele School (18 months - 12th grade), and Cathedral School of Saint Mary (PK3-8).
