Lakewood Village was originally developed in the late 1950s and consisted of one-story ranch homes on one-quarter to one acre lots. The original neighborhood was small and is adjacent to the picturesque Bull Creek District Park. The neighborhood was divided in the late 1970s, when Loop 360 was constructed. After 360, the west side of Lakewood Village was further developed to become what is now called Lakewood. It is made up of only a few of the original ranch-style homes. The neighborhood grew in the late 1980s, to include several hundred homes consisting of garden homes and single family homes.
Lakewood has a community center, which consists of a junior-size Olympic swimming pool and tennis courts. The clubhouse has kitchen facilities, which can be reserved for neighborhood events.
Both neighborhoods are located in Austin Independent School District. Because the highways split the neighborhoods, the students attend different elementary schools. Lakewood Village students attend Doss Elementary and Lakewood students attend Hill elementary. Both are blue-ribbon schools. Both neighborhoods have access to Murchison Middle School and Anderson High School, which offer the International Baccalaureate Program.
The neighborhoods are in close proximity to The Arboretum, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and Nordstrom's Rack. The newly-developed Domain Shopping Center is just a short drive down Loop One, which boasts higher-end shopping and dining. Dining options include authentic Tuscan food at Siena's, Eddie V's for excellent Surf and Turf, new-American cuisine at Z Tejas, and of course, the iconic County Line Barbecue on the lake.
