The East Austin Studio Tour, two weekends a year, celebrates the neighborhood’s art and culture with commercial venues and private residences opening their doors to the public. Austin’s creative lifestyle becomes a walking tour of imagination and whimsy. Many bars and food trailer parks offer culinary artists a chance to strut their stuff. And, international musicians flood the streets of East Austin with their talent during the annual SXSW festival.

One of the top advantages to living on Austin’s east side is the ability to hike and bike around Town Lake. A swath of public park space just south of Chicon Street allows easy access to the trail. During the twilight hours of dawn and dusk, thousands of residents (and their dogs) take to the trails jogging, strolling, or bicycling, along the shoreline of Ladybird Lake. This daily health ritual is just another great way to meet up with friends and neighbors during the week or on weekends. On Sundays, there is also the Hope Farmers Market where the freshest fruits and vegetables are brought in for locals to buy. You can also find public Yoga classes and handmade goods while you shop to the sound of live music at Plaza Saltillo.

The street, East 6th Street, typically begins in Downtown Austin at Congress Avenue. However the East 6th Street that I’m referring to actually starts I-35, our interstate, and runs east about 1.5 miles or approximately 12 blocks on the east side of Austin. It’s home to many restaurants, bars, businesses and most importantly condo and loft living, starting with Kurt and Alice. Those prices start about the $170,000.00’s and above. Then there’s 2124 Condominiums and Este Condominiums, starting in the low $200,000.00’s and above. Plus we have our neighboring street, East 5th, at East 5th and Comal where you can find the Satillo Lofts. Those start about the mid-$250,000.00’s and above.

Starting from I-35, we have 6th and Brushy, which is in the high $200,000.00’s to $300,000.00. Then we have the 1305 Lofts, which is the high $200,000.00’s to $300,000.00’s and then we also have the Ends on 6th, which is at the very end of 6th Street, near the H-E-B, which starts in the high $200,000.00’s to $300,000.00’s. East 6th is home to the University of Texas Elementary School, a public charter school in which admission is based on certain zip codes, such 78702. The nearest convenience store is the 6th Street Cool Store, at the corner of East 6th and Comal where you can find a mural of Bob Marley on the wall. Some of the most notable restaurants in the neighborhood include the Buenos Aires Café on East 6th, their Este location, which means “East.”

There’s also Qui, Q-U-I, which is named after Paul Qui, the winner of the Texas Edition of Top Chef. He also has food trailers throughout East 6th Street, called East Side King. One of the great things about the East 6th Street neighborhood is its accessibility to everything and you can get to everything via walkability, scooters, bicycles, cabs, Car-to-Go’s, the Metro Rail or however you want. We have a saying here in Austin, which is, “Keep Austin Weird,” which means “Support local businesses.” Here on East 6th Street we have many barber shops, cafés, art galleries and restaurants, including many food trailers with their ever-changing menus. We are also within walking distance to downtown Austin.
