Things to do in Downtown Austin

Residents of Downtown Austin condos get to enjoy front-door access to parks and recreation, including Lady Bird Lake and the hike and bike trail that runs for ten miles around it. Downtown Austin also offers great nightlife across several entertainment districts, with plenty of bars and restaurants to keep things interesting. You can get your shopping fix at the 2nd Street District, South Congress Avenue, and the Lamar Blvd shops. The many nearby parks include Auditorium Shores, Butler Park, Zilker Park, Pease Park, Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail, Centennial Park, and Shoal Creek Trail. Residents can get a taste of Texas history with attractions like the Texas State Capitol, the Driskill Hotel, Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, and the LBJ Library.

Downtown Austin Schools

Downtown Austin is served by several highly rated public and private schools, among them Stephen F. Austin High School, part of the Austin Independent School District. With over 122 campuses across Central Austin, Austin ISD has grown to become the flagship district of the city. It is host to dozens of Exemplary and Recognized campuses, as rated by the Texas Education Agency. Public schools in the Downtown Austin area include Pease Elementary, Mathews Elementary, Kealing Middle School, and Austin High School. Private schools in the Downtown area include the Austin School for the Performing Arts and the Khabele School.

So Downtown Austin is centrally-located and it’s kind of like a grid and you’ve 35 MoPac and north you’ve got MLK and then you’ve got South Congress.  If you wanted to get over to the airport, it’s about 10 to 15 minutes so very easy access to get in and out of downtown.  Some of the top high rises, the newer high rises you’ve got more of a medium price range at the 360 Condominiums, which is located at 3rd and Oasis.  You’ve also got the Spring, which is centrally located right next to Whole Foods.  There’s price range between $400,000.00 on up to $700,000.00 for your 2-bedroom.  

You can also get up to a three-bedroom in that building.  Some of the smaller 1-bedrooms in the property are around $200,000.00 to $250,000.00 and then you’ve got your ultra-luxury properties, which are gonna be a much higher price point but will still have some available at the W, the Four Seasons and The Austonian.  If you’re looking for more affordability in downtown, you can go to buildings such as the Railyard.  You’ve got Avenue Lofts.  You’ve also got The Brown Building, which is the only historical building in Downtown Austin.  

What attracts a lot of the residents down here is the ability to hop on the Hike-and-Bike Trail.  Most of the buildings downtown allow you easy access or direct access to the Hike-and-Bike Trail.  Take a run, go for a bike ride, walk your dogs (it’s a huge dog city down here), you’ve also got Zilker Park and Public Square Park, and you can even head on over to Barton Springs and swim.  Another attraction for downtown is the arts and theaters and music that you’ve got Austin Music Hall across the way, La Zona Rosa, you can enjoy the Ballet Austin, plus there’s the Paramount Theatre Convention Center on the Auditorium Shores, everything just minutes from your doorstep.  If you’re living in downtown with kiddos, it’s the Austin Independent School District and you Peace Elementary, which services K through 5th Grade, O. Henry Middle School services 6th through 8th and then Austin High School services 9th through 12th.  

You have a lot of local restaurants that you can enjoy.  Right in the heart of the city you’ve got Garrido’s, which is a nice high-end Mexican restaurant, Mulberry’s, Taverna, which is a good Italian restaurant.  You’ve also sushi opportunities.  You can go down to Maiko.  You’ve got Kenichi down here, which is a fabulous restaurant as well and there is always Perry’s Steakhouse.  

You also have a Ruth’s Chris down here.  There are several boutiques down here very close to all the high rises.  You can head on over to 2nd Street Warehouse District where you can find stores like Girl Next Door.  Of course everyone that lives down here really likes to enjoy Whole Foods.  It’s the flagship Whole Foods, located at 6th and Lamar.  A great place to go shopping, also a fantastic place if you wanna just grab some food and for some local opportunities you’ve got Royal Blue Grocery right downstairs, 360 as well as over on 2nd Street.  It’s a very fun, energetic, laid-back city so close to the water.
