Cherrywood Austin

Cherrywood is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in East Austin It is a quiet yet thriving community with a strong, artistic personality. During the 1980s, several small areas - including Willow Brook, Schieffer Place, French Place, University Park, and Avalon - were merged into one community, now referred to as Cherrywood. Located just east of Interstate 35 and north of Manor Road, this neighborhood is in Travis County's 78722 zip code.

Buyers searching for Cherrywood homes for sale will find narrow streets lined with oaks, pecans, and crepe myrtles. The neighborhood has a mix of bungalows, ranch-style homes, craftsman cottages, and 2-story stucco duplexes built between the 1930s and 1950s. Cherrywood homes for sale average over 1,600 square feet in size and most have 2 to 3-bedroom floor plans. Cheerful gardens and colorful facades give this community an air of whimsy and warmth that are extremely attractive to those in the market for a new place to live.

Cherrywood is in the heart of Central Austin, bounded by Interstate 35, Manor Road, and Airport Boulevard. I-35 provides convenient north-south access across the city, and US-183 is easily reachable via Airport Blvd. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is just 8.6 miles southeast of Cherrywood, and Downtown Austin's Entertainment District is merely 4 miles away.

Things to do near Cherrywood

Cherrywood is a thriving, diverse community that boasts a growing number of restaurants, cafés and neighborhood pubs, as well as a lively annual crafts fair. Patterson Park offers a seasonal pool, basketball and tennis courts, and even a skateboard park. The nearby Mueller Lake Park, located at the site of the former Mueller Municipal Airport, is a lovely green space with a pond, walking trails, and a farmer’s market. Grocery shopping is convenient, with two large stores in the area: the ethnic-centered Fiesta Mart and local grocery powerhouse HEB grocery store. Nearby employers include the University of Texas and St. David’s Medical Center and the neighborhood’s proximity to I-35 allows residents to commute to many other attractions.

Cherrywood Schools

Austin ISD serves students living in Cherrywood. Maplewood Elementary (PK-6), Kealing Middle School (6-8), McCallum High School (9-12) are school assignments for this community. Private schools include Clearview Sudbury for students grades K-12, and child care centers and preschools such as the bilingual Escuelita del Alma. The University of Texas is a short distance away, with free shuttle buses available.

The best thing about the Cherrywood neighborhood is really where it’s located. You are east of I-35, which is our major highway, north of Manor Road, south of 38th Street and this puts about 3 miles away from downtown and about 8 miles away from the airport. Homes in the Cherrywood neighborhood were built between the 1940s and 1960s. They’re mostly 3-bedroom, 2-bath. The price point is between the $250,000.00’s on up.

A lot of the homes do retain a lot of their original charm. Sometimes you can even find some with the original hardwood floors. The Cherrywood neighborhood has 3 schools that feed into it. There’s Maplewood Elementary, Kealing Middle School and McCallum High School. This area is a growing area with a lot of young families as well.

The amenities of the Cherrywood neighborhood just include its proximities to where it’s located. You have Patterson Park, The Muir Lake and the Cherrywood Pocket Park as well. In terms of shopping from the Cherrywood neighborhood, you’re only 3 miles away from downtown, which gives you access to everything that downtown has to offer so the best restaurants around Cherrywood are the Cherrywood Coffee House and a lot of businesses down on Manor including Vivo’s, which serves up Tex-Mex and Mi Madre’s, which has wonderful brunch on Saturdays and Sundays and a fairly new business called the ingredient with a great outdoor patio and some great beers. The best thing about living in Cherrywood is really its location. You’re 3 miles away from downtown and right near I-35 to give you access to North Austin and of course the price point.

Starting at the $250,000.00’s it’s a very moderate price point to be in Central Austin. The other thing I like about Cherrywood is its developing arts scene. Manor Road has both the Salvage Vanguard Theater and the VORTEX, which support small, local, independent theater production and, of course, the very first Bee Keeping Tour is coming up as well. Some of the most unique things to me about the Cherrywood neighborhood despite its location is also the types of homes in the neighborhood. Every home is so unique and individual in its style. I also of course love the small businesses that have all opened up around here to service this community.

One of my other favorite things about this neighborhood is coming here in the evenings, watching families play with their kids, getting to know one another and walking their dogs.
