The Central East Austin neighborhood is within Austin ISD. Students attend Blackshear Elementary School (PK -5), Kealing Middle School (6-8), and McCallum or Austin High School (9-12). Central East Austin is located between Lady Bird Lake, 535, MLK, and Pleasant Valley and Chestnut. It ranges from 3 to 10 minutes away from downtown and 10 to 15 minutes from the airport. Many of the homes in this neighborhood were built in the early 1900s. These bungalows are typically on pier and beam foundations with wood siding, high ceilings, and wood floors. Other turn of the century homes were modest versions of the ornate Victorian houses. In the last 10 years, new homes with a more modern architecture have been built to add a more contemporary feel. Prices range from $120,000.00 to just below a million, with many of the remodeled homes selling between $300,000.00 and $450,000.00.

There are several schools that are very convenient to the neighborhood. The children in this neighborhood attend Sanchez, Metz, Zavala, Blackshear, or UT elementary schools, Martin or Kealing middle schools, and Austin, McCallum, or Eastside Memorial high schools. Kealing Middle and McCallum High Schools are both magnet schools.

The Central East Austin neighborhood offers several amenities. There are neighborhood parks near just about every area, three public pools, two public libraries, harbor museum, and a post office on East Sixth Street. Residents also enjoy very close proximity to Lady Bird Lake and the Hike and Bike Trail.

The shopping opportunities are plentiful in this part of town. There’s art at several different studios, landscape design at Big Red Sun, running gear at Rogue on East Fifth, and one of a kind dresses at Solid Gold, not to mention this neighborhood is less than a mile and a half from the West Second Street Shopping District.

Whether dining in or grabbing a bite to eat at one of our several food trailers, your options are gonna be interesting and diverse. There’s Buenos Aires for great Argentinian food, Cisco’s for down-home cooking, Justine’s offers French cuisine, and also some great options are Blue Dahlia and Hillside Pharmacy on East 11th Street. Neighbors and visitors also frequent East Austin Trailer Park and Eatery, Eastside Drive-In, Three Little Pigs, for some of the city’s best trailer food. There really are so many other food options in Central East Austin that it’s impossible to mention them all.
