Less than 20 miles west of Austin in Travis County’s 78736 and 78738 zip codes is an upscale community offering buyers a wide range of home styles and price points. Perched on the edge of Texas Hill Country, Bee Cave is one of Austin’s most popular areas and posed for residential, retail and commercial growth along TX-71. On the way to Lake Travis and the Lakeway area, Bee Cave is known for its location near the world famous Hamilton Pool Preserve.

So why is this area called Bee Cave? There are two different versions of the story, but the one I like the best says that the area was named after Mexican honeybees. They apparently burrowed into limestone cliffs along Barton and Little Barton Creek, made nest, and deposited honey.

The City of Bee Cave was not formed until 1987, but by March of 2015, the population of this area had grown to over 11,000 people. And today, the Bee Cave City Hall and Bee Cave Library are the centerpiece of a fabulous shopping and business center at the Hill Country Galleria. Directly across from the City Hall and Library is the Hill Country Galleria Amphitheatre. They offer free concerts on fall Saturday evenings, plus lots of events for children, like Trick or Treating at Halloween, and visits with Santa at Christmas. Adult-oriented events include the popular Rolling Sculpture car show, and the occasional wine tasting. If you're looking for a movie theatre, check out the 14-screen cinema and the restaurants that surround it.

Whole Foods, H-E-B, and many popular nationally-known shops are located in or near the Hill Country Galleria. Big box stores, such as Lowe's, Best Buy, Office Max, and PetSmart are across Highway 71, and the shops in the Galleria. Excellent medical care is available nearby at St. David's Emergency Care Center, Lakeway Regional Medical Center, and early ancillary offices.

Children in the Bee Cave area attend schools in the Lake Travis Independent School District. Six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Lake Travis High School provide exceptional opportunities for students in academics and athletics. The Lake Travis Youth Association also provides affordable recreational opportunities for over 4,500 children, and NITRO Swimming's 30,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility, featuring an Olympic-size competition and training pool.

Music aficionados will love The Backyard, which is a nationally-known music venue. It hosts such artists as Bob Dylan, and of course, our very own Willy Nelson. Golfers will be in heaven with six golf courses to choose from within a 20-mile radius. Boating and water sport enthusiasts will want to check out Lake Travis, and the nearby Lakeway Marina.

Bee Cave Central Park, which is where we are right now, has large and small pavilions, playgrounds, a hike and bike trail, and connects to the trail system at the Hill Country Galleria. For the more adventuresome, Reimer's Ranch and Hamilton Pool are only a short drive down Hamilton Pool Road from Bee Cave. Reimer's Ranch is a 24-acre haven for outdoor enthusiasts. The Pedernalaes River forms the Western boundary of the park, and provides an idea place to catch white bass when water levels are high enough. The park has abundant wildlife, features almost 20 miles of mountain bike trails, and also has several hiking trails for different ages and fitness levels. Reimer's Ranch is also known as one of the best places in Texas for rock climbing.

Three miles farther town Hamilton Pool Road is Hamilton Pool. This historic swimming hole features a 50-foot waterfall where Hamilton Creek plunges into the head of a steep box canyon. The Hamilton Pool Preserve is a very fragile ecosystem where you can see endangered species, such as golden cheeked warblers, and lots of rare plants.

If talking about exercise makes you hungry, like it does me, then you'll find plenty of choices for eating in the Bee Cave area. Without even leaving the Galleria, you can find sushi, steak, seafood, Argentinian cuisine, Tex-Mex, fusion, or just an all-American burger. For an intimate fine dining experience, try Plate by Dzintra. This small, reservation-only destination has a few tables, but its owner is a powerhouse chef who studied in Paris.

Home prices in the Bee Cave area range from the high 200s to the multimillions. And with a dozen different neighborhoods, you're sure to be able to find what you're looking for here. Lake Point is a popular neighborhood that offers homes for the first-time home buyer, as well as the move-up buyer. The Point at Lake Point is a gated section, where homes are much higher in price, but have larger lots and panoramic views.

Most neighborhoods like Lake Point have homeowner's associations, which provide neighborhood amenities, such as community swimming pools, tennis courts, and hike and bike trails. Spanish Oaks is an exclusive gated community which offers million to multi-million dollar homes situated around a golf course. Neighborhood amenities rival those of many popular resorts. The Homestead is a Bee Cave area neighborhood that features acreage home sites, and allows homeowners to have horses. Riding trails crisscross this popular neighborhood.
