Bastrop TX Real Estate

Steeped in history, the area of Bastrop was originally Mexican territory and home of the Tonkawa Indians that developed in the mid-1800s as a German colony. Named after Baron de Bastrop, the little town flourished supported by harvesting lumber from Lost Pines Forest. Today, Bastrop is the county seat and part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area. While much has changed, history is evident in the Downtown Bastrop historic district, also known as Lost Pines of Texas. In 2010, over 100 buildings were designated as part of the historic district by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In 2011, one of the largest fires in the history of Texas destroyed 32,000 acres of the Lost Pines Forest as well as homes and businesses in that area. Devastated by this loss, the residents of Bastrop came together in support of those affected and remains a strong and close-knit community.

Bastrop, Texas is 33 miles southeast of Austin at the intersection of Highways 21, Highway 71 and Highway 95. Most Bastrop homes for sale are in the 78602 zip code spread out over 9 square miles of beautiful countryside. Driving along Highway 71 from Houston, the damage from the Lost Pines fire remains visible. While it may take a generation for the forest to recover, there are signs of new growth throughout the area and a plan for replanting pines and native shrubs and grasses. The community of Bastrop continues to grow in spite of this disaster. Its location in the historic triangle along with Elgin, Texas and Smithville, Texas and its location along the main road to Houston, makes this region attractive to developers. The town’s tourism draws many to the historic district, the state parks, and to annual events such as the Fourth of July Weekend Patriotic Festival and Fireworks. There are 6 elementary schools, 2 intermediate schools, 2 middle schools, and 4 high schools. Private school options include Nazarene Christian School (PK-12), just outside of Bastrop State Park.
