Many students in Barton Creek attend Saint Gabriels Catholic School, Saint Michael's Catholic Academy, Saint Andrews Episcopal School or Regents Christian School. 

The Barton Creek neighborhood is aligned with Oak Hill Elementary, O. Henry Middle School, and Austin High School, all part of the Austin ISD. Barton Creek was originally established by the development of the estates of Barton Creek: by Ben Barnes in 1983, a former lieutenant governor, and John Connally, former governor of the state of Texas. The initial 212-lot community was Austin's premier luxury destination at the time, located among rolling hills in a deep valley gorge cut into the soft Texas limestone by Barton Creek itself.

Based on the community's initial success, Ben Barnes surveyed a 4,000-acre tract of land, then put in motion a plan to develop a mecca for luxury living in central Texas. His vision centered around what was to become a world-renowned country club, spa, and resort destination, the Barton Creek Resort & Spa. It opened in 1987 and has become Texas' number one golf resort. The resort has three of the most challenging courses you'll ever experience: the Fazio Foothills, the Crenshaw Cliffside, and the newest, Fazio Canyons Course.
