Barton Creek was originally established by the development of the estates of Barton Creek: by Ben Barnes in 1983, a former lieutenant governor, and John Connally, former governor of the state of Texas. The initial 212-lot community was Austin's premier luxury destination at the time, located among rolling hills in a deep valley gorge cut into the soft Texas limestone by Barton Creek itself.

Based on the community's initial success, Ben Barnes surveyed a 4,000-acre tract of land, then put in motion a plan to develop a mecca for luxury living in central Texas. His vision centered around what was to become a world-renowned country club, spa, and resort destination, the Barton Creek Resort & Spa. It opened in 1987 and has become Texas' number one golf resort.
