The AIA homes tour takes place in October every year. Because the tour is curated by the Austin chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the homes on display are often more unique than what you may be used to. Unlike other home tours that highlight lavishness, the aim of the AIA home tour is to find “best examples of architectural excellence no matter what the size, style, or budget.” The tour is spread all across Austin, so not only will you get to see some of the most innovative real estate in the city, you’ll also get to explore a wide variety of Austin neighborhoods. It’s not a free tour, you can preorder tickets for the whole thing or pay at each house individually, but it’s worth it to see some of Austin’s best architecture.
You’ve seen the t-shirts, people in Austin love to celebrate the weird, and that even extends to houses. The Weird Homes Tour was started in 2014 in response to people saying that Austin was getting a little too normal. The Weird Homes Tour proves that while Austin may be expanding, it’s not turning cookie cutter. Real estate remains an art in Austin. The 2015 home lineup includes a house made of bags of adobe and another made out of a Dumpster, as well as some more traditional dwellings that happen to be a little quirky. Ten percent of the proceeds from the tour go toward Austin’s affordable housing programs. So make like a true Austinite and get weird while you get charitable.
Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, the 2015 Parade of Homes is sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Greater Austin and features custom homes in the Serene Hills community. Whether you’re in the market for a multi-million dollar home, or just want to get some ideas for the future, the Parade of Homes offers first-hand access to some of the most luxurious custom homes and beautiful real estate in Austin. In addition to the stunning architecture, you’ll also enjoy the Lakeway scenery, and the gorgeous landscaping that comes with it. The Parade of Homes runs from May 22 to June 7 and tickets are only $12.50.
Located within The Reserve at Lake Travis, a resort-style community and private club, the Luxury Home Magazine Tour of Homes, features luxury homes built by some of Austin’s most prestigious custom home builders. In addition to touring the seven multi-million dollar homes, guests on the tour have the opportunity to explore The Reserve’s resort-style amenities and spend some time at the Cypress Club. It’s the ultimate Hill Country real estate experience. The tour takes place in the middle of June and tickets are available on the website.
Organized by the Downtown Austin Neighborhood Association, the Downtown Living Tour features the best in urban living in Austin. If suburban living isn’t your scene, the Downtown Living Tour will give you a taste of the best downtown real estate in Austin. The tour includes an air conditioned shuttle to get you from condo to condo, as well as drinks and hors d'oeuvres at different stops. In addition to exploring the best Austin condos, you’ll also have the chance to enjoy the full downtown flavor by visiting storefront shops and cafes, as well as the city’s ubiquitous food trucks.
The Modern Home Tour Austin sprawls all across the city, from Steiner Ranch to East Austin and features some of the city’s most unique and, well, modern homes. The properties vary from 1,700 square foot condos to 6,400 square foot estates, each with its own personality. The wide variety of styles proves that any homeowner can define what it means to be Austin cool for themselves, you just need to have a bold vision and execute it.
