Modern Homes Austin

We often confuse the word Modern with the word Contemporary when thinking about home design. Modern style homes, constructed during the 1920s to 1950s, are marked by clean, unadorned lines and natural materials such as teak, stone, and polished metal. Does this sound a lot like Mid-Century Modern? It should because Mid-Century Modern is the timeframe during which architects drew their inspiration for the Modern style homes period of design.

So, what is contemporary style? Contemporary style homes are the designs trends of today’s architects and builders. What makes this more confusing is that Modern designs are being recreated and upgraded with advanced technologies, so that while they harken to yesteryear, they are contemporary style homes. Just remember that Modern design is found in homes constructed during a specific period and their design elements never change.

Where to Find Modern Homes in Austin

Austin has many examples of Modern architecture in both residential and multi-family buildings. There are Modern style homes for sale in the 78701,78702, 78703, 78704, 78705, 78745, 78750, and 78751 zip codes. Modern style multi-family buildings include Brazos Place Condos, Piazza Navona Condos, and several modern-inspired communities such as Walsh Place, Solavera, and Ford Place.

In addition to these residences, Austin is fortunate to have several highly-acclaimed architects that design contemporary homes in the modern style. Buyers consult with Jay Hargrave, Tom Hurt, Bercy Chen Studio, Nicole Blair, Kevin Alter and KRDB or any of the other well-known design houses to discuss their vision for a home in this period or for a newer home that incorporates these design elements into the blueprint.

Features & Floorplans

Identifying Modern style homes for sale is not just about dates of construction. This architectural style uses geometric shapes, asymmetry, and angles to create living spaces that fuse indoor with outdoor areas. Interiors are bright due, not only to smooth walls, but large windows (often floor to ceiling), sleek materials such as granite, linoleum, concrete, and stucco. Exposed stone was the only exception. Architects used the rough stone to contrast the smooth interiors as well as to enhance the connection between indoors and out.

The low, flat rooflines gave the eye rest and were a significant departure from the gabled rooflines of earlier years. Even the colors used during this time reflected the architect’s attempts for a sleek appearance. Varying shades of white were used throughout many homes to help focus the eye on the geometric line instead of the décor.

Kitchen areas grew larger and more streamlined with cabinetry and appliances strategically placed and color coordinated. The use of built-ins was also popular during this era adding to the sleek look and feel of interiors.

Beyond just materials used, designs also incorporated the existing elevation or landscape. This departure from typical home design resulted in multi-level houses that blended harmoniously with the exterior landscape. The extensive use of glass brought a snowfall or rain shower right into the living area and elevated the importance of exterior landscape and lighting.

History of Modern Design

Modern style homes represent some of the most dramatic and innovative architectural advances in residential construction. The work of prominent architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, as well as many others inspired many of the iconic homes we now think of as modern. Their work, inspired by advances and new ideas coming out of design schools from around the world, arose during the early 1920s to the 1950s. Architects, during those three to four decades, used a variety of styles and construction materials to create what are now considered some of the country’s most beloved national treasures.

What are the hallmarks of Modern Design? During the Modern era, many architects around the world began experimenting with new ways to use materials. The development of sheet glass, steel, and iron revolutionized techniques in home and commercial construction. New developments in technology and engineering were the game changers during this period. Architects built homes like Fallingwater, The Farnsworth House, The Miller House and others that were such a departure from existing trends that they became the blueprint for building custom homes. Of course, these styles filtered down to the mass market where the minimalist design with lots of glass and open space translated well into less expensive housing.
