History of Craftsman Design

This design developed out of the English Arts and Crafts movement and evolved into the American Craftsman style of the 1920s to 1940s. At the turn of the century, architects and designers turned away from the overly-decorated Victorian home toward a building style that could be mass produced.

The American Craftsman movement of the 1930s brought a new simplicity of form that used local materials such as stone as well as the talents of local craftsman. As demand rose, these designs were simplified even further to the point where a land owner could order a kit from Sears and Roebuck and have it shipped to the site with directions on how to put it together. As this design’s popularity grew throughout the United States, the interior layouts also became more standardized to include kitchen, dining room, living room, and upstairs bedrooms. While servants were the primary users of kitchens in the Victorian era, today’s family does their own meal preparation. The kitchen was promoted from outbuilding to a family gathering space within the home and within view of other common rooms. With the introduction of the breakfast nook, Craftsman homes provided a space to interact. Usually set under a large window or in a bay, this area also served to connect the kitchen to backyard activities or to allow supervision of children at play.
