Sixth Street
It’s no surprise that Austin’s 6th Street is ranked among the top metropolitan entertainment districts in the nation. The 7 blocks between Congress Avenue and Interstate 35 feature some of the city’s most popular bars, restaurants, clubs, and music venues, which cater to a wide range of interests and styles.
Formerly known as Pecan Street, the area features many late 1800-1900s buildings which have been converted to downtown businesses ranging from bars and clubs to pizza and tattoo parlors. On any given night, visitors can choose from a wide array of entertainment options, from a comedy or burlesque show at Esther’s Follies to a film premiere at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz. Great food is another reason to visit 6th street. Downtown dining options include world famous Texas BBQ, metal-rock themed pizza, Austin’s best Tex-Mex, and plenty of fresh seafood.
Music lovers from all around are attracted to 6th for its many live music options. Whether your preferred genre is puck rock, country music, or anything in between, you are guaranteed to come across a show that suits your fancy. They don’t call Austin the live music capital of the world for nothing!
Because 6th Street attracts college students, tourists, professionals, and entertainers, it's a great spot for people watching. This is especially true during Halloween and Mardi Gras when thousands of downtown patrons come celebrate and show off their favorite costumes. Due to its tremendous popularity, 6th Street is blocked off Thursday-Saturday evenings, creating a pedestrian corridor from 1-35 to Brazos Street.
