Driskill Hotel

The Driskill Hotel, located in the heart of downtown Austin, is the oldest operating hotel in Austin. The Driskill was opened in 1886 by Col. Jesse Driskill, a cattle baron who wanted to create the grandest hotel in the region. The Driskill Hotel remains one of the premier hotels in Texas today.

The classic Romanesque style hotel building is among the most beautiful in Austin. It is located on 6th street in downtown Austin within walking distance of the city’s best attractions from the Capitol to Lady Bird Lake. It features 189 guest rooms including several deluxe suites featuring classic decor.

The hotel is known for its classic elegance, featuring an balcony overlooking downtown and a large, open rotunda that sits under a domed skylight. The Driskill also features two restaurants, bridal suites, and a grand ballroom where elegant gatherings often take place.

President Lyndon B. Johnson made the hotel became his campaign headquarters during his congressional career and is said to have watched the 1964 presidential election results from what is now the Presidential Suite. Several actors and politicians have also stayed at the Driskill during their stay in Austin.

The vibrant downtown neighborhood in which the hotel is located is near some of the most best residential properties downtown. To learn more about homes in this area, check out new home listings in downtown Austin.
