Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, located at 1800 North Congress Ave just north of downtown was opened in 2001 by former Texas Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock. The museum is dedicated to telling “The Story of Texas.”
The museum incorporates three floors of exhibits each dedicated to a particular theme: Land, Identity, and Opportunity. Each theme is brought to life by interactive exhibits that allow visitors to truly experience Texas History with all of their senses. Because the museum is a non-collecting institution, there is always something new and exciting for visitors to explore.
A favorite feature of the museum is the special effects theater, called “The Spirit Theater.” Its feature film, called “The Star of Destiny” tells stories of Texas legends and heros from Sam Houston story to the Galveston Hurricane Story. Stories come to life with special lighting, movement, and sound effects. Viewers will also experience thrilling wind and smoke effects.
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is also home to Austin’s only IMAX theater, which features films ranging from educational movies to Hollywood blockbusters. Its ongoing film, Texas: The Big Picture, tells how Texas became the great state it is today.
The museum features its own cafe and a gift shop that carries Texas-themed items. It is open Monday through Saturday 9am-6pm and Sunday 12am-6pm except on New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day. Ticket packages and museum memberships are available.
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum is located near other local attractions including The Texas Capital and Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium as well as historic Central and West Campus neighborhoods.
