Located in Southwest Austin, the Austin Zoo & Animal Sanctuary is a nonprofit rescue
organization and animal sanctuary whose mission is to assist animals in need through rescue,
rehabilitation, and education.
The zoo started out as a goat ranch and was eventually transformed as a place to rehabilitate
rescued animals and perform animal research. Today it houses over 300 rescued animals, both
exotic and domestic. In 2009, the Austin Zoo added 60 new animals including llamas, lions, prairie
dogs, and pygmy goats.
Austin Zoo is one of Austin’s primer attractions for families and animal lovers. The zoo is open
most days from 10am-5pm and is located off Highway 290 in Southwest Austin at 10807 Rawhide
Trail.
