How to Recycle in Austin: What Is Recyclable and What Is Not

Do your part to help our Earth and learn how to properly recycle.
Since the BP oil spill in April 2010, America's environmental impact on the world has been on the chopping block. While you can't directly extract oil from the Gulf of Mexico, you can do your part to limit your carbon footprint by recycling. And if you're going to help, wouldn't you rather do it right and not counter-act your efforts?
Most Americans aren't recycling correctly and it's costing them time and more taxes to not learn how.
A few years ago, the City of Austin established a one-bin recycle system which keeps all recycable material together versus sorting it into separate glass-only or plastic-only bins. The new system has made it easier for Austinites, freeing them of having to maintain separate bins, but harder for trash collectors since it is now harder for them to find mistakes. To offset trash collectors' time and money, city officials decided to throw away recycled material that isn't sorted properly. So now when a trash collector sees misplaced trash in recycling bins, it's never sorted through and salvaged. Instead, to save them time and taxpayer money, it's thrown out with the trash and all your efforts have been thrown out with it.
Learn how to recycle to keep our world cleaner and greener.
Each city has its own list of what to recycle and what to throw away. To help out everyone–specifically trash collectors and taxpayers–here's a list to keep track of what goes in your blue streamlined recycle bin and what you should keep out of it.

You can recycle plastics with recycling numbers #1 - #7. Thanks for the question. I'll add it to the post. :)

The plastic liner in boxed wines: can it be rinsed and recycled? The company tells me it's #7. Can I recycled with plastic bags? or single stream? or Cycled Plastics?
Cycled Plastics, btw, recycles styrofoam.
Thank you!

Hi Celeste,
I'm the moderator for this blog and wanted to get back to you re: your comment above. I just looked on the City of Austin's recycling center website, and it looks like you cannot recycle the lining of boxed wine. It's considered a product wrapping plastic: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/sws/disposal_index_p.htm#plastic_packaging
Great information re: Cycled Plastics! Thanks for the update! :)

Hi Heath,
No, you cannot recycle sanoprene with the City of Austin. It's a type of rubber, if I understand correctly, and they don't have a center for dropoff nor a service for pickup. There's a center called Recycler's World that might do this type of recycling, but I can't seem to find a number: http://www.recycle.net/Rubber/index.html
My suggestion is to send an email to City of Austin Solid Waste Services requesting a service for rubber recycling. You can find their contact form here: http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/sws/sws_info.cfm I just filled it out and requested a rubber recycling service or recycling center for sanoprene. It took 2 seconds to fill out the form and will be more effective if more requests for the same service are sent to their department. Let's spread the word!
Let me know if you get anymore information. Would love to share it with our community!

I'm curious about what happens when something that's not supposed to be recycled is in the recycled bin. Does the whole bunch get tossed? Someone has to go through each piece?

Thanks Brittanie for the information regarding recycling sanoprene. I sent en email requesting that option become available as well to the City Of Austin's Solid Waste Services. I called info. for Recyclers world # which is 512-836-7512 and they only recycle metal. They do have Rubber Broker groups for dealer/traders of rubber. If anyone has any suggestions on where I can get sanoprene (a type of rubber) recycled I would appreciate the info. Thanks!
