Austin Ranks High For Next Best Recovering Job Market

Austin ranked #14 on Businessweek's Top 25 Next Job Markets To Recover list. Reports claim that Austin did well during the recession due to the abundance of education and government jobs. Austin, home to the University of Texas and State Capital of Austin, is one of the few cities that have helped to stabilize the economy. Here are the stats:

Last quarter Q3, the annualized job growth was down at only -1.4%. The projected annualized job growth for Q1 2010 is estimated at 1.2%. Austin recently had its first quarter of recovery in Q4. Austin's unemployment rate is 7.3%, lower than the national double-digit average, 11%. The Austin Chamber of Commerce has a great write-up on this here.

October 2009 Shows Surging Austin Home Sales

Home sales surged high in October 2009 versus last October 2008. While homes listed were up in 2008, they didn't sell as well compared to 2009 sales according to the Multiple Listing Service report by the Austin Board of REALTORS®. Austin real estate experts attribute the success of Austin's housing market to the tax credit extension.

“Sales volume like this is similar to what we saw in 2005, which is an encouraging sign. Austin's Technology Job Market Still Strong

Even though tech-related jobs in Austin took a sharp turn for the worst this past year, Austin is still one of the best job markets in the U.S. to find employment opportunities in the technology industry. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, Central Texas lost 12% of employed technology workers to layoffs in 2009 as compared to 2008. While Central Texas lost 1/8 of its employed tech workers, Indiana-based Dice, Inc. reports that Austin has the second highest percentage of tech-related job postings in the country, trailing right behind Charolette, North Carolina.

Retail Sales Growth Expected To Improve Austin's Economy

According to a report done by Pitney Bowes Business Insight, Austin is expected to grow in retail sales through the year 2010. Where there's retail growth, there's economy growth and a better way of living. The nation-wide study includes data from different retail sectors, including drug stores, high-end retail, mid-tier retail, and value retail stores. Austin ranked number one on the list followed by several other Texas cities, including Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio ranking third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.

Is the Housing Market Trending Upward?

A new report by Zip Realty, Inc. states that homes listings in Austin, Texas dropped 20% compared to homes listings in November 2008. The number of available homes on the market is not as high as it was this time last year. Some market analysts believe this means that the housing market is on the cusp of a positive trend. Across the country, the trend is not as evident with only a 2.4% decrease in homes listings. Austin's economy is well on its way to recovery, but then again, Austin's real estate is not a bubble market and never was in trouble. Austin is and always will be worth your investment.
