What is a Spanish Style Home?

Spanish Style Home in Austin TX

Austin Spanish Style homes draw inspiration from a wide range of architectural styles and sources.  This home style was born from the architectural traditions brought over by Spanish settlers in combination with styles adopted from the Hopi and Pueblo Indians.  Older Spanish style homes bring to mind 18th century mission churches, which were established by the Spanish during the colonization of North America.  Modern Spanish style homes draw design elements from Italian, Portuguese, African, and Greek architecture resulting in a more Mediterranean look and feel.  Spanish home styles became popular in the U.S. during the 1920s and remain so today.

The following features characterize Austin Spanish style homes:

Stucco exteriors with heavy wood trim and curved roof tiles define this style.  Spanish style homes may also contain many arches on windows and porches.  Arched windows are sometimes made of stained glass or have iron or wooden grilles that create a rustic look.

Floorplan:  This style is defined by open, asymmetrical floor plans. Homes are usually one-story and spacious with arcaded walkways and large patios.

Inside, Spanish style homes have low-pitched tile with exposed wooden beans.  Windows and doors are typically arched.
