What is a Mediterranean Style Home?

Mediterranean Style Home in Austin TXMediterranean style homes draw influence from French, Italian, and Spanish villas.  Popular throughout the world, this home style brings to mind a luxurious costal vacation.  Mediterranean homes are especially popular in very warm or costal climates, because they are known for keeping homes cool.  The following features define Mediterranean style homes:

Interior:  Open, asymmetrical floor plans and high ceilings are common in Mediterranean style homes.  Typically, Mediterranean home plans are one-story designs, however two-story models not uncommon.  Large, open windows can be found throughout this style of home. Open, communal areas such as verandas, courtyards, patios, decks and balconies make use of outdoor space.

Exterior:  Low-pitched, red-tiled roofs are a hallmark of Mediterranean style homes.  Exterior material is nearly always stucco in neutral shades of white, beige and sand.  Characteristics shared with Spanish style architecture include large columns, as well as arched entryways and windows.  Many Mediterranean homes also have large backyards with lush landscaping and swimming pools.
